The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association
spearheaded this year’s ‘Think Pink’ campaign

It was good week if you like pink; it was a better week if you want to help fight breast cancer.

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association spearheaded this year’s ‘Think Pink’ campaign, which was picked up by more than 900 participants – and given tremendous support by ESPN during its February Frenzy and Big Monday telecasts.

Some college teams wore pink uniforms while others trimmed their home whites in the chosen color (thanks in part to support from Russell Athletic). There were pink shoelaces, pink whistles and pink-clad fans as schools and local charities partnered to raise money for breast cancer research. ESPN highlighted the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund (in partnership with The V Foundation), and NCAA officials used those pink whistles in ‘Calling for a Cure.’

In its first year, the Think Pink campaign drew support from 120 teams, and this year’s goal was 750. Instead, that goal was left far behind as the Think Pink movement gained more and more momentum. In fact, other sports are joining the effort, such as swimming and diving, men’s basketball, tennis and gymnastics.

Though lots of money was raised (totals weren’t available at press time), just as important was the awareness that the nationwide series of events creates. Players, coaches, officials, fans and nationwide TV audiences were reminded once again of the importance of the battle against breast cancer – and will hopefully Think Pink all year round.
